During the Covid-19 pandemic, we witnessed the interruption of the supply chain. We witnessed people losing their source of income and experiencing the resulting financial hardship. We witnessed people going back to the basics of life, learning to do things from scratch such as cooking, washing clothes, giving haircuts, gardening – you name it!
I asked myself, what if all the systems that make up the supply chain collapse due to a pandemic, climate change, or sociopolitical unrest? What if we lose our economic viability as a country? What if the healthcare and educational systems fail us? Will my children have the necessary skills to survive? Do we currently have the needed resources to have control over our food sources? Can we ensure our family’s financial viability in the future? Can we manage a household that uses sustainable resources and helps reduce our carbon footprint? Can we practice emergency medicine when needed? Do we have access to natural and reliable sources of water, energy, and food?
Today, I embark on a journey of a lifetime with the commitment to discover a new life; one of freedom, ease, and collective resilience. I want myself and my family to learn all the skills necessary for our survival and welfare. I want those skills to be taught to my children and grandchildren. I want us to take responsibility for our lives and know that we can create sustainable and healthy communities that allow us to experience happiness in connection while harmoniously cultivating the earth’s resources.
— Wendell Berry
One of the hallmarks of healthy and resilient communities is learning and knowledge transfer. Building communities of resilience requires building a network of individuals who are keen and focused on capturing the knowledge and wisdom of those who have traveled the path of resilience and are willing to share their learning with those around them, including our children and teens.
The increased popularity of consumer culture and excessive reliance on technological enhancements have contributed to cultural knowledge loss within the population regarding essential life skills such as traditional food preparation, desert gardening, food storage, and survival skills.
In addition, the increased socio-political tensions and possible future interruptions to the food supply chain due to a future pandemic or geopolitical risks in a globalized world make us vulnerable to food shortages.
Families must begin actively preparing for their future and work on future-proofing their children by teaching them essential life skills. It is essential to preserve generational knowledge in areas such as organic gardening, traditional cooking, food preservation, navigational skills, handicrafts, sewing, and many more to survive an unpredictable future and equip ourselves and our children with the knowledge they need to thrive.
Vine Communities Club
The first Skills Share Membership Program in the UAE
Introducing the Vine Communities Club: a Skills Share Membership Program, where you're not just a member – you're part of a vibrant community dedicated to lifelong learning and growth.
Whether you're a seasoned expert or a curious beginner, there's something here for everyone. Discover the power of community in fostering resilience toward a shared goal of personal and collective growth. Join like-minded individuals in a supportive space dedicated to cultivating resilience across all aspects of life.
The Vine Communities Club is a unique, one-of-a-kind community-based skill-sharing program for people in our local community. The program allows members to attend regular community meet-ups, assess their skill gaps in essential life skills, and set self-sufficiency and future preparedness goals for themselves and their families.
Once enrolled, community members will have regular meetups at Vine Communities Center to exchange knowledge in different areas to ensure they meet their set goals as well as get the opportunity to share "know-how" and expertise relating to their professional work or life passions.
The membership gives you access to a learning community of mothers who gather to share skills with each other, making it a one of kind community-led program in which individuals (mainly mothers) join a network of people keen to learn about resilience and pass on generational knowledge to their peers and children.
Skill-sharing happens when registered members with expertise in different areas are able to teach workshops to members of their tribe while enhancing the skill-sharing experience for all members by providing regular practical workshops in the areas of their skills gap.
Members who identified their skill gaps in the first session will be able to choose workshops suitable for their needs. The program deploys a 'just-in-time' learning model, meaning that you get to choose from various sessions that suit your needs and fill your skill gaps to progress on your journey toward resilience.
Sessions will run in Arabic and English and can be offered to all community members, including children, teens, and parents.
The Vine Communities Club enables members to share their knowledge and expertise with their community by teaching a workshop or a class, enriching the lives of others with skills for life. When you join the club, you will:
Join a tribe of like-minded individuals gathered for a common goal and create lifelong friendships.
Access an exclusive Facebook Community to stay connected.
Attend a bi-weekly community meet-up to learn from seasoned experts in various fields, such as cooking, sewing, gardening, and Arts & Crafts etc.
Get the opportunity to share your knowledge and expertise with your community members by teaching a workshop or a class for adults or children!
Assess your life skills and resilience skill gaps. Set resilience and self-sufficiency goals while you select an accountability buddy from the community to help you achieve your goals.
Whether you are selling organic vegetables that you have grown in your backyard or household items such as baked goods, fermented vegetables, and or jars of spice, The Vine Communities Center will organize a Backyard Growers Bazaar for our local community members to set up their farmer's market stand and sell directly to your community members or people in your city while providing you with the opportunity to practice self-reliance and community support.
We believe in local reliance and building communal resilience to lessen dependence on a fragile supply chain system. The Vine Communities Network is a directory of local homemade goods and service providers. The directory can be downloaded by request to provide a list of local businesses and licensed individuals with whom you can purchase and/or exchange goods and services. The Vine Communities Network will include a directory of goods and services to buy and exchange in items such as preserved goods, homemade baked goods, seeds, plant cuttings, dried herbs, medicinal plants, green products, and locally provided professional services.
To continue the conversation and spread awareness about topics related to self-sufficiency, food security, and community resilience, Vine Communities Center will arrange seasonal specialized talks and workshops for the public, either at the center, the farm, or online.
Have fun going on educational field trips around the Emirates! Trips include organic farms, ecological spaces, beach cleanups, educational institutions, etc.
